🌱 Tree Planting & Transplanting
Tree Planting & Transplanting
in the High Country, NC
Replanting after a removal, filling a bare spot, or moving an established tree that's in the wrong place? River Birch plants and transplants across Watauga, Ashe & Avery Counties — with species that actually thrive at High Country elevation. Fully insured, free estimates.
How Planting & Transplanting Works
Right tree, right spot, set up to survive the mountain seasons.
- 1
Walk the Site & Pick the Tree
We look at your spot — sun, slope, soil, and elevation — and help you choose a species that will actually thrive in the High Country, not just limp through its first year.
- 2
Prep & Place
For a new tree we dig and amend the hole and set it at the correct depth. For a transplant, we root-prune, lift with as much root ball as we can, and move it carefully to the new location.
- 3
Set, Stake & Water In
We backfill, stake where the wind calls for it, mulch the base, and water in — the details that decide whether a mountain planting takes hold.
- 4
Aftercare Guidance
You get clear, simple aftercare — watering, mulch, and what to watch for through the first seasons — so the tree gets established instead of struggling.

Planting & Transplanting Questions
What to know before we plant or move a tree.
-
What trees do best in the Boone / High Country area?
Species suited to the elevation and cold — natives like red maple, serviceberry, dogwood, white pine, and spruce tend to do well, depending on your sun, soil, and how exposed the spot is. We'll match the tree to your specific site when we walk it. -
Can you move a tree that's already established?
Often, within reason. Smaller, younger trees transplant far more reliably than large mature ones. We root-prune, lift as much of the root ball as we can, and move it carefully — and we'll give you an honest read on whether a particular tree is a good transplant candidate. -
When is the best time to plant or transplant in the mountains?
The dormant seasons — late fall through early spring — are usually best in the High Country, so roots can establish before summer heat and the next winter. We can plant other times too; we'll just plan the aftercare accordingly. -
Do you replant after a removal?
Yes — a lot of our planting is putting the right tree back after we've taken a hazardous or dead one down. We can grind the old stump and set a new tree nearby in the same visit. -
Do you guarantee the tree will survive?
We can't guarantee nature, but we set every planting up to succeed — right species, right depth, proper staking and mulch, and clear aftercare — and we're honest up front about any spot or tree that's a long shot.
